Artist Bio: At age nine, Gerry Huggins began to explore the musical world with his saxophone. His talents with his sax won him the Outstanding Musician award in senior year of high school. Huggins attended Cal State University and received a BA in Communications. While studying, he continued playing his saxophone at Bakersfield College. This earned him two Most Outstanding Musician awards in the Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble. In addition, he won two Outstanding Soloist awards for his appearances at the Fullerton College Jazz festival. His love for music turned professional during the mid 90s. He was invited to record with the local band, "The Pleasure Merchants" in their sophomore album, "Rhyme or Reason". Following that, he began playing for a variety of local bands, including "Thee Majestics", "T.O.S.B (The Old School Band)", and "The Rhythm Kings". After collaborating with keyboardist Darnell Gholston, he realized that his true passion was smooth jazz and RB. Funk, jazz and old school styles are also among the genres Huggins exceeds in. His technique also can stretch from classical to big band. His debut album, "Ocean Breeze" was released in 2002; only to be followed by "A Very Special Christmas" in 2005 and "From the Heart" in 2007. Huggins is currently working on new material and hopefully will be released in the near future. Huggins continues to freelance in the Southern California area. He has a son, and resides in Bakersfield, CA.

Schumacher decided to actually lean into this idea but gave it a genuinely positive spin. Naturally, Batman Forever ages Dick Grayson up to be at least 18 — actor Chris O’Donnell was 24 at the time of filming — and his relationship with Bruce Wayne is centered around Dick’s desire to become Bruce’s partner in crimefighting. Simply the continuous use of the word “partner” in the dialogue brings up allusions to homosexual relationships.

But, what isimportant is Bruce’s treatment of Dick directly after the murder of Dick’s parents at the hands of Abby QZYYU7128 Mens Charming Loafers Leisure Moccasins Concise Design Breathable Classic Style Leather Slip On Comfy Slide Flat Fresh Lace Up Black FPiTcQ2
. After giving Dick a place to stay, the young acrobat immediately jumps on his motorcycle with the intent to hunt down Two-Face and kill him. Bruce tries to dissuade him by complimenting Dick’s bike. Dick replies, “Hang out at a lot of biker bars, Bruce?” This is obviously a negative implication about Bruce’s possible sexuality.

However, Bruce takes this intended hurtful read and spins it into something positive. He takes Dick to his garage and shows off his collection of classic motorcycles. Dick is clearly enamored with the collection and Bruce offers Dick the chance to repair one and keep it. It’s moments like this where Batman Forever begins to assert a positive relationship between the two. But, when the subject of becoming partners rears its head after Dick discovers Bruce is Batman, the conflict begins to take shape.

Bruce’s arc in Batman Forever centers around his complicated feelings about being Batman. He views it as his darker side and begins to question if he should even be Batman. A lot of this is explored through the character of psychologist Dr. Chase Meridian , played with sultry excellence by Nicole Kidman. This being a huge studio movie, these two characters have to strike up some kind of romance.

This is where the idea of Batman being a metaphor for Bruce being bisexual comes into play. His struggle involves what he views as conflicting desires: be Bruce Wayne and lead a “normal” (read: heteronormal) life or continue to be Batman and satiate his inner self (bisexuality). This is brought to a climax when both Chase Meridian and Robin are kidnapped and damseled by the Riddler . Batman is able to save them both and pointedly tells the Riddler that he has learned that he can be both Bruce Wayne and Batman. It’s an acceptance of his multiple lifestyles that can easily be read as him coming to terms with his bisexuality.

It’s elements like this that put a different spin on the Batman character than what we’ve seen in other movies. Granted, Batman Returns also used the dual identities of its characters to explore ideas of less-than-conventional sexual desires, but Batman Forever is the first to include a queer interpretation of that concept. And speaking of the Riddler…

One of the interesting elements of Batman Forever is that the main villain doesn’t have a vendetta against Batman, but is actually driven to become a supervillain because of Bruce Wayne. Edward Nygma, portrayed by Jim Carrey, is obsessed with Bruce Wayne. When the character is introduced, we see his workstation is plastered with magazine covers and clippings of Bruce. Nygma freaks out at the chance to meet Bruce and show off his new invention. When Bruce shuts him down, Nygma acts like a jilted lover and vows to surpass Bruce as a titan of industry. He even patterns his public style after Bruce Wayne in appropriately creepy stalker fashion.

I am impressed by the detailed classification of Bukhari’s Hadith; I am not aware of any parallel analysis, so we do have a significant contribution to the academic study of the traditions. The breadth of the study is commendable.

Peter Cotterell , PhD

lecturer, London School of Theology

Bernie Power’s stated goal in Challenging Islamic Traditions is to contrast al-Bukhari’s collection of the Hadith—a body of text that details the traditions of Muhammad and the early Islamic community—with the teaching of the Bible as well as norms from other societies. Power asserts that to understand the Qur’an, “the key text of Islam,” it is necessary to understand the Hadith. This sheds light on why Islam has failed to fulfill its claims that it is the ‘answer’ and will “prevail over all other religions.” It also helps the reader grasp the reasons that underlie “Islamic violence, its lack of progress, and the so-called ‘clash of civilizations’ with the West and other countries.” In Section One, Power sifts through challenges to the “whole concept of the Hadith,” including the way in the which the Hadith were assembled, as well as the confusing nature of the connection between the Hadith and the Qur’an. The reader will be able to grasp concerns, including the problem-laden process—spanning a period of approximately two hundred years after Muhammad’s death—of the compilation of the Hadith; and the challenges that the isnad (‘lists of transmitters’) system poses to the “historical reliability of the Hadith.” In Section Two, Power’s objective is to show that while there appear to be commonalities between the Bible and the Hadith, a careful scrutiny reveals that there are differences both in factual material as well as lessons taught. Power elucidates differences ranging from views of God, the life of Jesus and Muhammad, violence and vengeance, views of women, and historical facts. In Section Three, Powers argues that the Hadith are found ‘wanting’ on numerous points. His discussion on political policies and human rights concerns provides fodder for discussion about whether Islam is viable as a universal religion. Given the obvious differences between Christianity and Islam, in the fourth section Power presents simple, yet effective suggestions for engaging Muslims. Power’s book is easy to read and replete with ‘technical’ information drawn from the Hadith.

What does it mean today to be a church totally committed to the gospel and fully engagedin God’s mission? What major religious and sociological trends in our world are affecting the role of the global church and local churches? How must we understand and be preparedto face these trends? How do we define “church” in the twenty-first century, being faithful to the Scriptures and at the same time relevant to a generation that does not believein the institutional church anymore? What are some good models of missional churches in different regions of the world that will encourage and inspire those who long to see achurch making difference in society and in the world?

These are some of the issues that the book you are holding in your hands addresses. Thereare certainly no final answers and magical forms; rather, we present a broad and deep discussionon how the gospel should be lived out by Jesus’ followers in our time and throughour communities. Questions are raised and analyzed both from the perspective of a localchurch as well as from a global and general understanding of the Christian church. Someof our examples will focus more on local realities, others more on global challenges.

The first part of the book is dedicated to a biblical and theological reflection on gospel, church, and mission. It includes Old and New Testament studies on the theological implicationsof being church, based on the biblical narrative. The second part deals with a variety of contemporary missiological issues related to thebroader theme of church and mission. Different perspectives from current discussions and dialogues around the globe are included, covering both ideological reflections and practicalaspects of being a mission-shaped church. The third part presents regional and national case studies that show the enormous creativityin church planting and engagement of local communities in their own societies. Models applied in the secularized Europe are contrasted to ways of functioning as church in fastgrowing congregations in the global South.

This book is a refreshing reminder of God at work in the world today. We are encouraged to reflect and develop a missional understanding of church that appreciates the roles of the church in the global West and global South, recognizing that the Christian church is the most diverse and inclusive community on earth. The contributors challenge us not to think of “church and mission” as if they were two separate aspects of church but ratherthe “church in Mission.” Its rootedness in Scripture and reflections of “missions praxis” around the world is enriching, and encourages local church leaders to see “mission” as the work and responsibility of each church member wherever they may find themselves.
